Japademy Review for 2026: Worth it or Not?

Japademy is an online Japanese class program.

Instead of using an app by yourself, you can join a real teacher on Zoom every week. The classes are small… no more than 8 students… so you actually get to practice. Each course runs for 10 weeks.

That’s what it is in a nutshell. But is it any good… especially with all the other Japanese class services out there?

Now let’s get to Japademy review. Is it good or not?

The Good Stuff

So, here are the good points of Japademy.

  • Real teachers – every class is taught by a certified native Japanese speaker
  • One flat price of $279 – video lessons, flashcards, and practice app all included
  • You learn to speak, listen, and read all at the same time
  • Clear 10-week structure so you always know what comes next
  • Teacher corrects you on the spot during class
  • JLPT exam prep courses available
  • In-person option in Yokosuka, Japan

The Bad Stuff

Of course, like anything else, it’s not perfect either. The fact that this is a class-based program means there’s a whole lot of baggage and structure that can either be good.. or overwhelming… depending on your personality.

You may not get enough attention and practice. The biggest issue with group classes is that the teacher’s attention is split. With 8 students in a session, you might only get 10 to 15 minutes of actual speaking time in a 105-minute class. That’s not a lot if speaking is the whole reason you signed up. I’ve taken classes with this many people… and there’s a good chance you’re going to get lost in the crowd.

The sessions are also long. If you’re tired or distracted that day, you lose your entire week’s live time…there’s no way to make it back up.

You’re forced to learn as fast/slow as the rest of the class. The group moves together, which sounds fine until you realize your classmates might be faster or slower than you. Either way, the pace won’t be perfectly matched to you.

You can’t start whenever you want. Courses run on set intake schedules, so there’s always a wait before you can begin.

The curriculum is proprietary, meaning there’s no way to see exactly how it lines up with JLPT levels before you pay. And once you finish all the available levels, it’s not entirely clear what the next step looks like…. you’d likely need to move to private lessons.

Japademy is also a relatively small and newer company. Third-party reviews are harder to find than with bigger platforms, and most of the reviews on their own site are ones they’ve chosen to feature.

Time issues. If you’re in Europe or Asia, finding a class time that works for your time zone might be a challenge. And everything runs through Zoom, so if you’re not comfortable with that setup, it adds a small layer of friction.

Pricing. $279 upfront is a real commitment if you’re still not sure Japanese is something you’ll stick with.

Not Self Paced, Not for Everyone

Here’s the thing… Japademy is a real class, and that’s not going to work for everyone.

If you have an unpredictable schedule, commute a lot, or just want to learn at your own speed, a class format will not work.

You’ll be waiting for others to catch up, or rushing to keep up yourself.

Missing a week can throw off your whole rhythm.

That’s where self-paced programs come in. Instead of joining a live class, you study on your own time — a lesson here, a lesson there — and you never fall behind because there’s no group to keep up with.

Self-Paced Alternative: JapanesePod101

The best self-paced option for Japanese is JapanesePod101.

JapanesePod101 is a popular learning program that teaches you Japanese through conversation-based lessons. Where you listen and learn. You hear a quick dialogue, then get it explained, and they get you speaking those same lines. It’s a guided, self-paced system that takes you from Absolute Beginner to conversational fluency.

You can listen on your commute, during lunch, or whenever you have a spare few minutes.

There’s a free account to get started, and paid plans start at just a few dollars a month.

If you want to build a strong foundation at your own pace, it’s one of the best tools available. And as mentioned, JapanesePod101 also has Live Group Classes, Private Classes and a Premium PLUS teacher option if you want teacher support.
